Directions

In a child's mind, even the smallest nook or cranny can become a hideaway, a fortress, or a teahouse. Create your child's own pint-sized private world, ripe for imagination and exploration or even just an afternoon snooze. Use a corner of her room to erect a small fabric teepee (canvas over PVC pipe, wooden dowels, or even bamboo sticks from a garden shop work great) or a circus tent made out of a big, colorful sheet or parachute.

Play the Exam Game

Play the Exam Game

Oh, I remember those weeks well. I, or rather, we (my mom and I), would spend hours preparing for a test, reading books cover to cover, doing flash cards, interpretive dance, and anything else we could think of to get facts to stick for a test that I would...fail. In the conference a week later, mom and I would hear the same comments: "Work harder, study more, take a parenting class," etc., etc.

A Fine Mess

Spiders tend to be more problematic in homes sited in wooded areas or that have naturalized landscaping, which are both ideal spider habitats.

A beneficial predator, spiders are some of the most feared household intruders, primarily due to such notorious species as the brown recluse and the black widow. While it's true that bites from these spiders can cause serious problems, most spiders, even ones that bite, are harmless.

Teen Space, Teen Privacy?

Teen Space, Teen Privacy?

Can your teen shut you out of her room, claiming privacy? No. While certain elements of your teen's life certainly are private, her room isn't really one of them. It's your house, and it's perfectly appropriate for you go in and out of her room occasionally (daily or weekly). What if she's left candy bars on the floor and now has mice? These are issues you need to know about.

Crate Training Your Puppy

A crate is a puppy owner's second-best friend. Properly used, a crate will help with potty training your puppy, prevent chewing and other destructive behaviors, provide a familiar refuge at home or away, and keep your puppy safe. If you use the crate as it's meant to be used, your dog will consider it his den. Some dogs choose to lie in their crates even when the doors are open.

K: HELP. I got the robocall this morning that school is closed. You?

J: Same here. Remember when you'd have to listen to like morning FM radio to find out if your school was closed? And put up with lots of boring ads for mattress stores and traffic reports and Belinda Carlisle songs to find out if you had school or not? Robotexts are so much more efficient.

K: Heck yeah. Hey, um, I have too much work to do today for the kids to not be in school.

Automobile Safety for Cats

Most cats don't like car rides much, but even if you don't take Felix on trips, he will probably have to ride in a car at least once in a while, even if only to go to the vet. Whether you're driving from sea to shining sea or just a mile to the vet, the safest way for your cat to travel is in a secure carrier, preferably a hard plastic one with washable bedding for comfort.
