Cookies in a Jar

Holiday Hints

If you liked making the cookies in a jar for your family and friends, you might want to try putting the dry ingredients for brownies or other dessert bars in a jar. You could also provide the ingredients for cut-out cookies and include some cookie cutters and tubes of icing with the gift.

The basic method to making cookies in a jar is to layer the dry ingredients into clean jars and pack them down. A recipe should be attached to the jar, describing how to assemble the remaining ingredients and bake a finished cookie. A decorated Mason jar works well with these delicious creations.

Level: Moderately easy

Time involved: One to two hours

Materials:

  • Clean Mason jar with lid
  • Piece of fabric
  • Rubber band
  • Ribbon
  • Two cinnamon sticks
  • Piece of holly
  • Cookie recipe
  • Adhesive label
  • Paper
  • Fine-tipped marker or computer
  • Hole punch
  1. Choose a favorite cookie recipe or use the one following.

  2. Combine the flour and baking powder and stir well. Pack the mixture in a clean Mason jar. Add the sugars and pack this down. Add oats, coconut, and cereal, or any other dry ingredients (such as chocolate chips, nuts, or raisins).

  3. Put the lid on the jar and screw down tightly. Place a square of cotton material on top of the lid. Gather the material around the lid and secure it with a rubber band. Tie a ribbon around the mouth of the jar, forming the ends of the ribbon into a bow. Catch a couple cinnamon sticks and a sprig of holly in the bow.

  4. Print the name of the cookie recipe on the label and stick it on the jar.

  5. Print the recipe on a piece of paper. (You could use a computer for this.) Fold the recipe in half and punch a hole in the top corner. Thread a piece of ribbon through the hole and attach the recipe to the ribbon on the jar.
