Talking to Teens About Sex and Substance Abuse

Talking to Teens About Sex and Substance Abuse

Even before young people begin talking about dating or who is “seeing” whom, it’s time to bring up the subject of sex. Don’t wait for an opening or the right time. Just do it. The way you address the topic with boys and with girls will differ, but the basic message is the same. Sex is a very serious matter and can have profound, life-altering consequences.

Teaching Teenage Girls to Say No

Teach girls to remember PC

The man who will attempt to molest a teenager needs an environment in which that's possible. He needs to get her to a place where there is nobody nearby who will hear her if she resists loudly or calls for help. His other option is to get her in a frame of mind where she doesn't resist loudly or call for help. Accordingly, there are times and places where wariness is called for, i.e., times of vulnerability. There are times and places where wariness is wasted, i.e., times when teenage girls are not vulnerable.

How Tall Will My Baby Be? (A Genetic Explanation for Height)

parents measuring baby's height

When a soon-to-be-parent learns they’re expecting a child, their brains go into overdrive—including wondering what—or who!—their child will look like. Brown hair? Blonde hair? Red hair? No hair? These genetic and inheritance questions may also make you wonder, "How tall will my baby grow up to be?" Will your baby be tall or short like me/the other biological parent?

I confess: I definitely wondered, and still do: How tall will my baby be?

Purebred vs Domestic Cats

Purebred vs Domestic Cats

Nonpurebred and purebred cats alike make excellent companions. In fact, about 98 percent of cats fall outside the purebred population. Although they are often called “mixed breeds” for convenience, this term is misleading because most of them have no purebred cats at all in their family trees. The terms domestic shorthair (DSH) and domestic longhair (DLH) are more accurate, if less concise. For brevity, I'll call them Domestics throughout this book.

Talking to Teens About Sexual Misconduct and Consent Before They Go Away to College

Mother talking with her college age daughter

Just before your teenager heads off to college, you should have “the talk” with them. Nope, not the SEX talk. There’s a pretty good chance they already know about that 3-letter word. My Baby Looks Nothing Like Me: A Genetic Explanation

Help! My baby doesn't look like me!

The creation of a human body goes far beyond simple building blocks. For around nine months, the womb meticulously assembles microscopic fragments of DNA from both parents to create a unique individual. During that time, parents anticipate how the baby will look. Will she be tall like the father, have dark skin like the mother, or soft green eyes like both?

Excitement builds as the time approaches to lay eyes on your mini-you…until your baby is born, and you notice, “My baby looks nothing like me!”
