With long summer days ahead, many people find themselves looking for a new hobby to relax and unwind. Hobbies can provide numerous benefits, both mental and physical, and help to relieve stress and stimulate the mind. Not sure what you want to get into? Here are the 10 best hobbies to take up this summer.

Knitting
Never picked up a set of knitting needles? Experienced knitters are always happy to show beginners the ropes. Find a local knitting group through sites like MeetUp.

Golfing
Never played before? Sign up for golf lessons with your spouse or kids at the local golf club. It's a great chance to spend time as a family while being active.

Painting
Acrylic paints tend to be the most forgiving for new painters, but don't be afraid to try watercolors or oils. Painting can be relaxing, especially if you let yourself enjoy the process and without focusing too much on the end result.

Gardening
- Will I grow vegetables, flowers, or herbs?
- Will I plant in pots, a lawn garden, or a community garden?
- Do I have all the tools I need to get started?
- How much time do I have to tend to the plants?

Hiking
If hiking with small kids, start with a short hike that's close by. Work up to longer hikes that are further away, and maybe even plan a camping trip.

Swimming

Fishing
If you do catch a fish and don't have to throw it back in, teach your children how to break it down and then cook it on the grill when you get home.

Camping
As a family, you can try car camping, which allows you to bring as many things as necessary and have them close by at all times. If you're not ready or interested in tent camping, try renting (or buying) a camper, or stay in a cabin for the weekend.

Walking
Start by taking a stroll around your neighborhood after dinner or in the morning before work, when the heat of the day isn't going to affect you too much. If you're looking for a social activity, try joining a local walking group!

Reading
Picking even just one of these hobbies will ensure that you make the most of every extra hour of daylight this summer, and can help alleviate stress. Get your kids involved too, and you'll be able to spend plenty of time as a family while making the most of the summer sun.
