Scarecrow Costume

Follow these simple directions to create a Scarecrow costume.

Scarecrow Costume

Time: 60-90 minutes

Effort: Easy - some sewing required

Materials:

  • Old pair of jeans/overalls
  • Old flannel shirt/plaid shirt
  • Pieces of scrap fabric (patches)
  • Old straw hat
  • Raffia or paper ribbon (tan)
  • Makeup, black eyeliner pencil
  • Silk flowers or craft-store crows (optional)
  • Glue
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors

Instructions: Glue or sew patches to various places on shirt and jeans. Cut up pieces of raffia to look like straw, or unroll paper ribbon and cut up pieces to look like straw. Glue "straw" to inside cuffs of pant legs and to inside cuffs of flannel shirtsleeves. Make it look like the straw is poking out. If you have some pockets in shirt and pants, glue on additional "straw."

Decorate straw hat with big old silk flowers or crows (from a craft store).

Paint face: Outline eyes to look like triangles and paint them a bright color. You can also outline nose and make some rosy red cheeks (two little circles). Then make a huge black smile, making sure lips are black, and make lines going down the smile to look like stitch marks.

Other Details: You can buy old flannel shirts and straw hats at your local thrift store for about $1 each.
