Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : either from a Finnish form of the Germanic personal name Heinrich (see Henry) or an ornamental name from heinä ‘hay’. During the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Finnish families with Swedish names such as Hahl, Hammar, and Henriksson adopted the name Heino. In the U.S. it is also found as a shortened form of Heinonen.
  • German and Jewish (Ashkenazic) : from a pet form of Heinrich.
