Oily foods are the tradition for Hanukkah (to celebrate the oil lasting eight days and nights), and latkes are no exception. These delicious little pancakes are made from potato, flour and eggs, then deep-fried to a golden brown. They're served as appetizers, side dishes or as the main event. Get ready to go on a serious sugar high. Sufganiyot, or jelly donuts, are also deep-fried and filled with either custard or jelly. Then, they're sprinkled with powdered sugar. This is an especially popular Hannukah recipe with kids, who love to help make them almost as much as they love to eat them.
Apples are more of a traditional food for Rosh Hashanah, but this spread goes so well with latkes, we couldn't resist. If you're going to use apple butter, we suggest leaving garlic out of the latkes (which some people add). You can also spread apple butter on popovers, muffins or any other bread you're serving.
