Math Codes

This activity is a lot of fun, and it will also help reinforce your child's basic math skills.

Math Codes

Required:

  • Writing supplies

Kids love to make and break codes. Here's a variation that adds a new level of fun and reinforces basic math skills at the same time. You can easily adjust the level of challenge for your child's math and reading level.

First, think of a secret message that you want to deliver to your child. Assign a number substitution for each letter in the message (the letter E might be represented by the number 8). At the top of a sheet of paper, draw a blank space for each letter in your message. Underneath each blank, write the number that corresponds to that letter.

On the rest of the paper, create age-appropriate math equations, such as 4 + 4 = E. By solving the equation, your child learns that the answer 8 corresponds to E in the code. When the remaining equations are solved, your secret message will be decoded.
