Week 39 of Pregnancy

Third Trimester

Your 39th Week

Time may feel as though it's standing still and every small twinge has you on the alert.

1. Breathing is now rhythmical, with your baby making around 40 breathing movements every minute.
2. The baby is so low down in your pelvis that you have probably exchanged discomfort in your upper abdominal area for pressure on your bladder.
3. At 39 weeks the average crown to heel length is 19.1 in (48.6 cm) and the average weight is 6.3 lb (3 kg).
4. The head may be covered with hair, a few wispy strands-or no hair at all.
5. The eye is large and well formed, although its neural networks are not yet sophisticated enough for the baby to focus. Vision in newborns remains poor for a few weeks after birth while the eye continues to develop.

Know the signs that mean labor is really about to start. You may have some false alarms, so don't hesitate to call your doctor for advice and reassurance. Excitement will be competing with nerves-and that goes for your partner as well. No one can predict how labor is going to turn out, but before the big day it's helpful to agree on what your partner's role should ideally be.

Your baby todayAlthough your baby's head is deep within your pelvis, it will remain rounded in shape. It is not until labor starts that the bones of the skull move closer to each other, elongating the shape of the head, and allowing your baby to pass more easily along the birth canal. read more

Your baby todayThis image demonstrates how your baby has laid down fat reserves, nicely rounding out the cheeks. The exact weight of your baby will depend now on which day you deliver since your baby will continue to grow in the uterus, although at a slower rate than previously. read more

You are 38 Weeks and 4 Days Pregnant

Your baby todayYour baby's neck muscles have strengthened, so the head can be held well away from the chest wall. Once delivered though, the buoyancy provided by the amniotic fluid will be lost and you will need to support your baby's head at all times while holding him. read more

You are 38 Weeks and 5 Days Pregnant

Your baby todayIn many ways you will be the best judge of the likely size of your baby, especially if you can compare it with a previous pregnancy. An ultrasound scan can estimate the weight, but as with all other measurements at this time it has a fairly wide margin of error. read more

You are 38 Weeks and 6 Days Pregnant

Your baby todayThe movements that you feel will usually be concentrated in a few areas since your baby cannot readily change position. Although the character of these movements will have changed, you should still experience many movements each day. read more

You are 39 Weeks Exactly Pregnant

Your baby todayThis baby can easily be seen at this late stage in the pregnancy because there is ample amniotic fluid present. The amount of amniotic fluid at this point is still extremely variable, but it is usually in the region of 0.75 pint (0.5 liter). read more
