Family name origins & meanings

  • German : from a pet form of the personal name Zyriak, vernacular form of Greek Kyriakos ‘belonging to the Lord’. The name was borne by two saints; Cyriacus the Recluse, born at Corinth in the 5th century, is reputed to have lived to the age of 108. The other saint of this name was a Roman martyr, of whom nothing is known except that he was buried on the road to Ostia.
