  • North German : from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements widu ‘wood’ + kind ‘child’. The name became famous as that of a Duke of Lower Saxony who was an opponent of Charlemagne, and was consequently popular in northern Germany as a personal name in the Middle Ages.
