Family name origins & meanings

  • Czech and Slovak : pet form of the personal name Valentin (see Valentine).
  • Hungarian (Valkó) : from a pet form of the personal name Valér, from Latin Valerius (see Valerio).
  • Hungarian : probably also a habitational name from any of various places called Valkó or a regional name from a former county so named, although in this case the correct form of the surname would be with the suffix -i (i.e. Valkói or Valkai).
