Family name origins & meanings

  • Cornish : habitational name from any of various places so called, for example near Bodmin, Liskeard, and St. Issey. Some of these get their name from Cornish tre ‘homestead’, ‘settlement’ + dynek ‘fortified’ (an unattested derivative of dyn ‘fort’); in other cases the second element is eythynek ‘overgrown with gorse’ or redenek ‘overgrown with bracken’ (both unattested).
