  • Finnish : from niska ‘neck’ + the common surname suffix -nen, applied either as a topographic name referring to some geographical feature such as a mountain ridge, rapids, or an isthmus, or as a nickname for a stubborn person. It is found chiefly in central Finland and can be traced back to the 16th century.
