Family name origins & meanings

  • Greek : from the personal name Nikētas, a derivative of nikān ‘conquer’. This name was popular among early Christians as an allusion to Christ’s victory over death, and was borne by several saints, including a 4th-century converted Ostrogoth and a 5th-century missionary to Dacia. Both have a more active cult in the Orthodox Church than the Roman Catholic.
