Family name origins & meanings

  • Scottish and northern Irish : Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Colmáin ‘son of Colmán’ (earlier Columbán), a diminutive of the personal name Colum. See also Coleman, McCallum. The addition of -t is due to English speakers’ perception of the devoicing of Gaelic final -n.
