Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish (Mäkinen) : variant of Mäki (see Maki) + the common surname suffix -nen. For the most part this is a relatively recent ornamental adoption: it was particularly popular during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and is now the fourth most common name in Finland. However, examples of it are found dating back to the 16th century.
