  • Dutch : from Middle Dutch crake, craek ‘carrack’ (a type of large merchant ship), hence a metonymic occupational name for the master or owner of such a ship.
  • German : topographic name from Middle Low German krack ‘underbrush’ or from Middle High German krac ‘crevice’, or alternatively, a nickname for someone with a harsh raucous voice, from krack ‘crow’.
