Family name origins & meanings

  • German : occupational name for a lime burner, from Middle High German kalc ‘chalk’, ‘lime’ (see Kalk) + brenner ‘burner’. Lime (calcium carbonate) is a product of some historical importance, obtained from limestone by heating (‘burning’). It had various agricultural, domestic, and industrial applications, including fertilizing soil, treating furniture, bleaching, and making mortar.
