Family name origins & meanings

  • Norwegian : habitational name from any of several farmsteads so named, from juv ‘gorge’, ‘ravine’, a word of disputed origin.
  • Catalan (Juvé) : occupational name for a maker of yokes, Catalan jover (Latin iugarius, a derivative of iugum ‘yoke’). This word was apparently also used as an occupational name for an oxherd.
