Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : from joki ‘river’ + the local suffix -la, originally a habitational name from any of various farmsteads named for their riverside location. During the name conversion movement from Swedish in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was adopted as a replacement by Finns with Swedish surnames, especially those containing Swedish ström ‘river’.
