Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : from hieta ‘sand’ + the local suffix -la, originally a habitational name from any of numerous farmsteads and villages so named, especially in western Finland; later, during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, it was also adopted as an ornamental name, especially by Finns bearing Swedish names containing the element sand.
