  • Danish and Swedish : topographic name for someone who lived by a main street, from gade ‘street’, ‘thoroughfare’.
  • German : from a personal name, a short form of the various compound names (for example Gottlieb) formed with Middle Low German gōd ‘good’ or god, got ‘god’, or from Old Saxon gigado, Middle High German gate ‘companion’, a byname for a compatible man.
  • (Gäde) : see Gaede.
  • Indian (Maharashtra); pronounced as two syllables : Hindu (Maratha) name, probably from Marathi gạda ‘cart’.
