Family name origins & meanings

  • German : from a byname for the standard bearer of a town guild, from early New High German fenrich. The term was formed and came into use around 1500, replacing Middle High German vener, from which the older surnames Fenner and the Alemannic form Venner were derived, and giving rise to Fähn(d)rich, the standard German spelling.
