  • Scottish and English : possibly a metonymic occupational name for a tax farmer, from Middle English ferme ‘fixed yearly amount payable as tax, rent, or the like’ (see Farmer). The English word farm did not come to mean ‘farmhouse’ or ‘cultivated land’ until the 16th century. Compare Farmer.
