Family name origins & meanings

  • Finnish : ornamental name from elo ‘life’, ‘harvest’; ‘grain’. It was adopted by many Finns during the name conversion movement in the 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in southern and western parts of the country.
  • Hungarian (Élő) : from a pet form of Éliás (see Elias).
