Family name origins & meanings

  • Romanian (Drago{s,}), and Serbian, Croatian (central Dalmatia), and Slovenian (Dragoš) : from a derivative of the South Slavic personal name Dragoslav, based on the adjective drag ‘dear’, ‘beloved’.
  • Americanized spelling of Hungarian Drágosi, a habitational name for someone from a place called Drágos(falva) in Transylvania. In some cases, perhaps a Magyarized form of Slavic Dragoš (see 1).
