  • Czech and Slovak : from a short form of the Czech personal name Budislav, composed of the elements budi- ‘to awaken or inspire’ + slav ‘glory’, or of any other personal name formed with budi- as the first element.
  • Hungarian : habitational name from the name of the old capital of Hungary (see Budai).
  • Slovenian (western Slovenia) : perhaps a derivative from buditi ‘to awaken’.
