Family name origins & meanings

  • French : altered form of Brosse, which has at least two possible origins:
  • a topographic name for someone who lived in a scrubby area of country, from Old French broce ‘brushwood’, ‘scrub’ (Late Latin bruscia), or a habitational name from any of various minor places named with this word.
  • occupational name for a brush maker, from the same Old French word in the transferred sense ‘brush’.
