Family name origins & meanings

  • French (Bréaux) : metathesized form of Beraud, a Germanic personal name composed of the elements ber(n) ‘bear’ + wald ‘rule’. Compare Braud, Brault.
  • The Breaux families of LA trace their origins to one Vincent Brault from La Chaussé in present-day Vienne département, who arrived in Acadia sometime before 1661. After the expulsion of the Acadians, several of his descendants found their way to LA.
