Family name origins & meanings

  • French : status name from Old French burgeis ‘inhabitant and (usually) freeman of a (fortified) town’, ‘burgess’ (from bourg ‘fortification’).
  • The records of Beaupré, Quebec, for 1667 document a Bourgeois from Picardy, with the secondary surnames Le Picard and Le Grand Picard. Another bearer of the name, from the Périgord region of France, is recorded in La Durentaye in 1697 with the secondary surname Laverdure.
