  • German, French (Alsace), and central European : from a vernacular pet form of the personal name Bartholomaeus (see Bach 6, Bartholomew).
  • Americanized spelling of Norwegian and Danish Bakke.
  • New York merchant and U.S. Postmaster General Richard Bache (1737–1811) was born in Settle in North Yorkshire. He came to New York in 1756, his brother Theophylact (a merchant) having arrived there in 1751. In 1767 he married Benjamin Franklin’s daughter Sarah.
