  • French : of uncertain origin, perhaps from a personal name containing the Old High German element ercan ‘precious’, ‘excellent’ (borrowed, via Latin, from Greek archi- ‘the first’, ‘the highest’). Compare Archambault.
  • Simon Arcand ‘dit Bourdelais’ (i.e. ‘from Bordeaux’) married Marie-Anne Inard in 1687 in Batiscan; their five sons had some thirty children before 1730.
