How would you like to hear the hole story? All you need for this activity are the stories—your child can provide the holes.
With your child, read aloud a page or two from a storybook. Then call out a part of speech—say, nouns—and ask your child to read the text again, this time without the selected words. You might want to demonstrate by reading a line or two yourself first. For the next round, select another part of speech—for instance, verbs—and have your child eliminate those words (as well as whichever words you chose for the first round) while reading the story again.
As an alternative, you can read the story aloud to your child, omitting words you've secretly selected. Then see whether your child can guess which part of speech you're skipping. Or have your child choose a magazine article you haven't read yet, eliminate a part of speech, and see how much of the story you can figure out before your child fills in the missing words for you.
