Fruit and Veggie Plants

Materials

  • Lemon, orange, grapefruit, Potting soil or earth and/or potato without lumps
  • Knife Plastic wrap and rubber band
  • Leakproof containers Large bucket
  • Water

Directions

Lemon, Orange, or Grapefruit Plant
  1. Soak the seeds in water overnight.
  2. Have your child fill a container about halfway with soil or earth.
  3. Poke the seeds about a half-inch into the soil.
  4. Cover the container with plastic wrap secured with a rubber band.
  5. Place the container on top of your refrigerator. In about three weeks, plants will sprout.
Potato Plant
  1. Have your child fill a large bucket about halfway with soil or earth.
  2. Lay two small potatoes on the soil and cover them with about one more inch of soil.
  3. Water the soil until it's slightly damp, then place the bucket in a warm, sunny place.
  4. Leaves will sprout in a week or so, then purple flowers, then maybe even tiny potatoes beneath the soil. (Caution: Potato plants can be poisonous if handled improperly. Keep your plant away from small children and animals. Keep your potatoes away from light by covering them with plenty of dirt and storing them in a dark place. Never eat a potato with green spots.)
