Designer Dreidel

Holiday Hints

Make several dreidel stained-glass ornaments to hang from each window, or string them together to make a garland. You might want to try making a Star of David design and alternating it with the dreidel. You can modify this project to fit any holiday theme by changing the symbol.

Level: Easy

Time involved: Half to one hour

Materials:

  • Poster board
  • Scissors
  • Clear contact paper
  • Several colors of tissue paper
  • Confetti pieces
  • White glue
  • Hole punch (optional)
  • Yarn (optional)
  1. Cut two pieces of poster board 7 x 5 inches. Fold one piece of the poster board in half along the 6-inch length forming a 6 x 2 1/2 inch rectangle. Draw half a dreidel along the fold. Cut along the half dreidel with scissors. You should have a whole dreidel folded in the middle. Cut out the center of the dreidel along the fold forming a 1/2-inch dreidel frame. Trace this dreidel onto the second piece of poster board and cut out the second dreidel.

  2. Cut two pieces of clear contact paper that are 7 x 5 inches. Lay one piece of the contact paper on a flat surface and remove the backing while keeping the sticky side up.

  3. Place the dreidel frame on top of the sticky side of the contact paper and cut around the edges.

  4. Cut small shapes (circles, squares, ovals, and so on) out of different colors of tissue paper. Sprinkle some confetti onto the sticky side of the dreidel and layer the tissue paper shapes over the confetti. Sprinkle some more confetti on top of the tissue paper. Trim any tissue paper that sticks out of the design.

  5. Glue the second dreidel on top of the first dreidel. Remove the backing from the second piece of contact paper and place the sticky side on top of the second dreidel, covering the entire surface. Trim the contact paper around the dreidel frame.

  6. If desired, punch a hole in the top of the dreidel and thread a 5-inch piece of yarn through the hole for hanging purposes.
