Turtle Costume

Follow these simple directions to create a Turtle costume.

Turtle Costume

Time: 1 to 2 hours

Effort: Easy - some sewing required

Materials:

  • Three shades of green felt (1-1/2 to 2 yards of one color for turtle shells; remnants or felt squares for the remaining two shades)
  • Fabric glue
  • Wide green ribbon
  • Velcro
  • Green sweatshirt (hooded if available)
  • Green sweatpants or tights
  • Green face makeup
  • Scissors
  • Needle and thread

Instructions: Cut out one large oval of green felt for the turtle shell. (Fit to the person's size.) Use this oval as a pattern to cut three more ovals of the same shape and size. (You could get by with only two ovals altogether - the front and back shells - but gluing the ovals together makes a heavier shell that won't flap around.) Now that you have your front and back shells, glue them together, leaving a space for the head, shoulders, and legs. Topstitch along edges if desired (not crucial, but makes a stronger costume).

Use ribbon to make straps to connect the front and back shells so the person can wear them as a sandwich board: Sew two pieces of ribbon to the top and sides of the front shell. Attach Velcro to the ends of the ribbon and to the inside back of the shell to attach straps.

Now cut out random pieces of the remaining two shades of green felt. These are markings for the turtle shell. Glue them onto the shells and let dry. If you have a hooded sweatshirt, wear the hood up; it looks more realistic. Green face makeup is another fun touch.
