Jailbird (Escaped) Costume

Follow these simple directions to create a Jailbird (Escaped) costume.

Jailbird (Escaped) Costume

Time: With supplies, about 30 minutes

Effort: Easy - some sewing

Materials:

  • White pants
  • White shirt
  • White fabric
  • White pillowcase
  • Black iron-on felt
  • Green fabric marker
  • Black fabric marker
  • Black construction paper and balloon (optional)
  • Play handcuffs

Instructions: Iron one-inch-wide stripes of black felt onto the shirt and pants. Cut a three-inch by six-inch rectangle out of white fabric. Write a prisoner number on it in black marker. Pin or sew to chest of shirt. Cut out a three-inch-wide strip of white fabric that fits around wearer's head. Cut out a circle of white fabric about six inches wide and sew the strip to the circle to form a hat. Draw stripes on hat with black marker. Draw a dollar sign ($) on the pillowcase and use it as treat bag. Then hang the handcuffs on one hand. If you want you can make a paper chain and tape it to an inflated round, black balloon to create a lightweight ball and chain to carry around or safety pin onto your clothes.

Tips: Even though you are an escaped jailbird, be polite. To make this even easier, you could buy a white painter's coverall outfit and hat at a paint supply store. Cut off hat brim, then paint black stripes on everything to resemble jailbird look. Remember the prisoner number.
