Pot of Bunnies

This bunny pot would look adorable on your mantel or bookshelf, but it also makes a fun toy for the kids. These cuddly bunnies are wrapped in blankets and ready for a bedtime Easter story.

Holiday Hassles

Whenever you sew a seam around the corner of a project (as in making rabbit ears), the stitches will have a tendency to pucker and possibly break from stress. To resolve this problem, you should make diagonal slits around the bias (outside) of the seam on the curve, being careful not to cut the stitches. Then trim the sewn seams to 1/4-inch wide. When you turn your project right-side out, it should lie flat.

Level: Moderately difficult

Time involved: Three to four hours

Materials:

  • Four 7 x 3 1/2 inch pieces of muslin or cotton material
  • Two 5 1/2 x 3 inch pieces of muslin or cotton material
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine and thread
  • Rub-on faces (You can find these in a craft store.)
  • Popsicle stick
  • Polyester fill
  • Three 6 x 5 inch pieces of pastel-colored felt
  • White glue or glue gun
  • Ribbon or rickrack
  • Cord
  • 4-inch clay pot
  • Pastel-colored craft paint
  • Paintbrush
  • White pom-poms
  • Wooden robin's eggs painted pastel colors (optional)
  1. Place two of the larger pieces of muslin together and fold them in half lengthwise (along the longer length). Cut out a 2-inch-long ear starting at the center fold and rounding off the top as shown. Repeat this step with the other four pieces of muslin. You should have cut out two larger rabbits and one smaller one. The rabbits will look like a tube with two ears on top.

  2. Place the cut-out rabbit shapes right-sides together and pin the edges with straight pins. Sew around the sides and ears of each rabbit, leaving the bottom open. Remove the pins, trim the seam, and cut a slit in the bias around the corners to keep the seams from buckling. Turn the rabbits right-side out.

  3. Place the rub-on face on top of the rabbit below the ears. Rub the transfer with a Popsicle stick thoroughly until the face is transferred.

  4. Stuff the bunnies' bodies (not the ears) with polyester fill. Sew the bottom opening together.

  5. Cut three pieces of pastel-colored felt 6 x 5 inches to form blankets for the bunnies. Fold the felt blankets around the bunnies and glue them onto the bodies of the bunnies with fabric glue or a glue gun. Glue the bottom of the felt together. Tie a piece of ribbon or rickrack around the neck of the bunnies.

  6. Tie a small piece of cord into a bow around the ears as shown.

  7. Paint the clay pot a matching pastel color, and glue a piece of the ribbon or rickrack that you used around the necks of the bunnies onto the top and bottom of the pot.

  8. Fill the clay pot with polyester fill and stick the bunnies inside the pot with the smaller bunny in front. Add a few white pom-poms on top for decoration. If desired, you could add a few painted wooden robin's eggs to the pot.
