  • Southern English : occupational name for a husbandman, from Middle English til(l)er, a secondary derivative of Old English tilian ‘to till or cultivate’. There has been some confusion with Tiler (see Tyler).
  • South German : topographic name of unknown origin.
  • North German : from a variant of Thiel.
  • variant of German Tüller (see Tuller).
