Family name origins & meanings

  • English : perhaps a habitational name from Rushmere in Suffolk, near Lowestoft, so named from Old English rysc ‘rushes’ + mere ‘pond’, ‘lake’.
  • perhaps also an Americanized form of German Ruschmeier, a topographic name for a farmer who lived and farmed in an area where reeds grew (see Rusch 1 and Meyer).
