Family name origins & meanings

  • Polish (Królik) : from a diminutive of Polish król ‘king’ (see Krol).
  • Polish : nickname from królik ‘rabbit’. This originated as an attempted calque on Low German dialect Kuniklīn ‘rabbit’, being misinterpreted as a diminutive of König, although in fact it is from the unrelated Latin word cuniculus.
  • Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic) : ornamental name from Russian and Yiddish krolik ‘rabbit’ (see 2 above).
