Family name origins & meanings
- Possibly an altered spelling of the English family name Godber, from the medieval personal name Godebert (see Gobert), or of Goodbeer, Godbear, when not a variant of Godber, an occupational nickname for a brewer or a nickname for a toper. Alternatively, it may be an Americanized form of the German cognate Gutbier (‘good beer’).
