Family name origins & meanings

  • German and English : from a medieval personal name, Godebert, composed of the Germanic elements gōd ‘good’ or god, got ‘god’ + berht ‘bright’, ‘famous’. The name was popularized in England by the Normans, and probably absorbed an Old English form Godbeorht. An Exeter moneyer named Godbryt is recorded in the reign of King Canute (1016–35).
