Your 32nd Week

Your midwife will be monitoring your baby's position in the uterus.

1. The baby's movements are mainly from side to side, and you won't know where to expect the kicks to come from.
2. The skin starts to look pinker and less translucent.
3. Creases can be seen in the skin of the wrists and the palms of the hands.
4. At 32 weeks the average crown to heel length is 15.7 in (39.9 cm) and the average weight is 2.9 lb (1.3 kg).
5. Increasing layers of fat and muscle are rounding out the baby's body, and she looks a little less skinny.

The baby has not settled into her final birth position just yet, but an assessment of how she's lying will be made at every routine checkup. There's still room in the uterus for your baby to exercise her limbs and she's getting much stronger and more active. You'll know all about it! As your belly gets bigger, it may become more difficult to be very active and to get comfortable when you're sitting or lying down.

Your baby todayYour baby's hand coordination continues to improve as her brain is better able to make sense of the feedback it receives. The eyes will often open but only for short periods at a time, reducing the chance of a stray finger coming too close. read more

Your baby todayHere the umbilical cord is seen lying over the baby's shoulder and next to the wrist. This is very common, in fact at some time every baby will have the umbilical cord lying close, especially during these next few weeks while the baby frequently changes position. read more

Your baby todayMeasurements around the head, abdomen, and thigh bones are used from the ultrasound image to estimate the weight of your baby. Interestingly, on average, boys are now starting to be slightly heavier than girls. read more

Your baby todayThis image shows a furrowed brow and an open-eyed expression. Just as the muscle tone in the limbs is strengthening, so the muscles of the face are being used and tested. This can produce some unusual expressions that do not necessarily reflect your baby's emotions. read more

Your baby todayYou can see from this image just how much amniotic fluid is around your baby at this time. Ultrasound displays the fluid as black on the screen. Sometimes there will be speckles within the fluid: these represent skin and hair cells that are shed as your baby grows. read more
