  • South German : metonymic occupational name for a nailsmith or occupational nickname for a shoemaker, from Middle High German zwic, zwëc ‘tack’, ‘nail’. In some instances it may have been applied as a nickname for a small person or a topographic name for someone who lived on a wedge-shaped piece of land.
