  • Slovenian, Slovak (also Župan), and Croatian (Župan) : from Slavic župan, historic term for a village headman, a derivative of Old Slavic župa ‘district’ or ‘community’. The modern Slavic word župan means ‘mayor’, ‘burgomaster’, or (in Croatia) ‘head of an administrative district’.
