  • English : topographic name for someone who lived in a stretch of open country by a wood, or (as a later formation) someone who lived near a field by a wood, from Middle English wode ‘wood’ (Old English wudu) + feld ‘open country’, later with the modern meaning ‘field’.
  • Scottish : habitational name from Woodfield, a place near Annan in Dumfriesshire. A certain Roger Wodyfelde is recorded as holding land in Dumfries in 1365.
