Family name origins & meanings

  • Dutch : perhaps an altered form of Welvaart, Welvaert, from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements wolf ‘wolf’ + hart ‘hardy’, ‘brave’, ‘strong’, or willo ‘will’, ‘wish’ + fridu ‘peace’. If this is correct, the second element has been assimilated by folk etymology to the Dutch word voord ‘ford’.
