- Greek : patronymic from Vlachos ‘Aromanian’, also a nickname meaning ‘hillbilly’. The -akis ending is particularly associated with Crete, where there is no indigenous Aromanian population; so the secondary, pejorative sense is probably more frequent in this instance.
